Reading through the Sunday Business Post there’s an article by David McWilliams about needing to seriously consider the use of Nuclear power in the future. Considering some of the countries with the most reliance to nuclear power – France, Germany, Sweden and Finland; they also have really good track records with, for example, not having horrible nuclear accidents. He made some good points, especially about the fact that these places are being run by responsible people who would care about how things work. I’m sorry, but I could not trust anyone in this country to run a nuclear power plant properly.

There are a number of sound reasons for considering an expansion of nuclear energy around the world. The fact is, if you want to constrain the emission of Carbon into the atmosphere, and you want to keep the lights on, nuclear energy is the only option.
I’m not against nuclear power, per-se. I’m against mis-managed nuclear power. Technicians following a flow chart is not my idea of skilled management.
I was at the Leviathan debate which lead to this article (or at least inspired it). I’m waiting on a response for a particular td before I post a review of it, but lets just say it was interesting.
Over the past 25 years, American nuclear power plants have compiled an enviable record of safety and reliability. The industry points to the work that’s been done by the Insititute of Nuclear Power Operations, and their use of transparency and peer review as a lever to improve performance.
Things have changed a lot over the past two decades, and folks ought to recognize that. In fact, it looks like many already do.
